Engineering fair at Rose State College teaches about success

Building blocks. That's what Dave Laukat, retired engineer and former chairman of the Oklahoma Engineering Fair, called the 700 students who filled the gymnasium this week at Rose State College.

Much like the toothpicks the students used to build bridges for the fair, Laukat said, each student is made stronger when they work together.

Every year, middle school and high school students from across the state come together to build upon their science, math and engineering skills with the hope they can become the next generation of Oklahoma's engineering industry.

For nearly three decades, the Oklahoma Engineering Foundation has sponsored the fair with the purpose of furthering education in science, technology, engineering and math, often referred to as STEM.

This year's activities included a competition to build the most durable miniature bridge and a showcase of rubber band-powered vehicles.

“Everything is manufactured today,” Laukat said.
