By William Crum Staff Writer wcrum@oklahoman.com

Jim Couch will retire in January after 18 years as city manager of Oklahoma City, saying Monday the time is right to open "another chapter" in his career.

Couch, 62, begins a two-year term as volunteer board chairman of the United Way of Central Oklahoma in January but, beyond that, said he had no particular plans.

The South Dakota native plans to stay in Oklahoma City, though, where he began work as Utilities director 31 years ago.

OKC City manager's retirement coincides with start of new era

BY STEVE LACKMEYER Business Writer slackmeyer@oklahoman.com

The announcement by Jim Couch on Monday that he is set to retire doesn't just mark the end of a record stint as city manager, nor is it notable only for how it was a time of growth and innovation for Oklahoma City.

One can even note Couch's 18-year run is incredible considering City Hall has had relatively few scandals and when they did pop up, they were handled with transparency and without games.

But just drive the town this week, take note of all that you love, and understand, much of it occurred under Couch's watch.

One might forget that City Hall, downtown, and the Oklahoma City as a whole was very different when then Mayor Kirk Humphreys and the city council promoted Jim Couch to city manager in 2000.

The 1990s were a turbulent time at City Hall as it lurched forward from an era of malaise to a nonstop campaign of reinvention that has yet to conclude.

Pauls valley hospital turns to online fundraising

Rural healthcare in the United States is a hot topic year in and year out, but it's gone to new levels in Pauls Valley, where a local hospital has turned to a popular online fundraising site to keep its doors open.

Oklahoma City — Pauls Valley Regional Medical Center should stay open Tuesday, its CEO said, but it's far from clear that the hospital can last through Wednesday.

Frank Avignone, the hospital's CEO, said Pauls Valley needs $500,000 by the end of the week to pay overdue costs for health benefits.
